Oberammergau Passion Play 2020

The spectacular Passion Play performed in the quaint German village of Oberammergau will take place in 2020 for the 42nd time. The first representation of life and death of Jesus Christ was performed in 1634, after a promise made by residents following months of suffering and death from the plague. It was then performed every 10 years and nowadays is still regarded as the most important passion play in the world.

All actors come from the village, since a special play law is in effect. All participants, from actors playing the principal roles - such as Jesus or Mary - to members of the choir, must have been born in Oberammergau or lived there for at least 20 years. Also, according to the long tradition of the "Beard and Hair Edict", by Ash Wednesday 2019, all participants in the play let their hair grow and men grow their beards too.Around 500.000 visitors are expected to come to Oberammergau for this once in a lifetime experience, so don't miss it!

The Passion Play will take place from May till October 2020. Different packages and accommodation solutions are available for the stay in Oberammergau, contact us for a quotation.
